On 20th April 2009, during our monthly meeting, it was unanimously agreed that there was not enough support for Fair Trade in Norfolk to continue. The AGM planned for 15th June 2009 at City Hall, Norwich will take place to formally close FTiN. During the AGM we hope to enlist volunteers to work with Norwich City Council as members of the Fairtrade City steering (monitoring) group, which will continue.
The aim of the 20th April meeting was to agree Fair Trade in Norfolk's future by reviewing ideas developed from the previous discussion in March. Attendance at the meeting was very low, so any ideas that had been received following the March meeting were not discussed.
During April's meeting, it was agreed that the priority had to be with the Norwich City Council Fairtrade City monitoring group. It was felt that the work of FTiN could be maintained through that group.
The future of this web site was discussed. It was agreed that it should close.
The meeting previously scheduled for 18th May 2009 has been cancelled.
The decision to close the committee is not one to be viewed in a negative light. Fair Trade in Norfolk has campaigned for and promoted fair trade for the past five years. During this time fair trade has moved from a less well known 'alternative' lifestyle choice for a few to the mainstream, becoming an every day choice for many. Although fair trade has come along way locally, there is still a long way to go, so campaigning will continue through other groups and organisations. It is hoped that those who have supported FTiN will come to the AGM to celebrate all the organization has achieved and say a final farewell.
We also hope some of you will continue the work of Fair Trade in Norfolk as members of the City Council monitoring group.
