Printing pages from this site

Print a web page

These instructions assume that you have a printer that is switched-on, holding sufficient paper, plugged into and configured to work with your computer.

  1. Enter your browser's File menu (usually at the top of the screen).
  2. From this menu, select either Print… (or similar) or Print Preview (if you want an on-screen preview of the way the page should appear in print).
  3. If you selected Print Preview:
    • You may notice some differences between the page as it appears in the preview, and the site as it appears in your browser. Read about the print layout of our site below.
    • If you want to continue with printing, click the Print… button (or similar).
  4. A Print dialogue box will appear, detailing the number of pages to be printed and the number of copies made, and allowing you to customise various printing options. When you are happy, Click OK (or similar) to send the web page to print.

Printer-friendly layout

When you print pages from the FTiN site, a printer-friendly version will be sent automatically to your printer.

This printer-friendly version is a 'streamlined' print version of our website's pages. Some of the visual features of the pages as they appear on the web are stripped out and not printed. Features of our pages that are not printed include the site navigation, the background colours and some other cosmetic elements. While photos and images within the content of pages retain their colour, the text content of pages is printed in black on a plain (white) background.

We've done this to save your paper and your printer ink, leaving you with the important stuff: the content of our pages. As a result, we hope also that you will find printouts from our site more usable in terms of material presented in a handy, practical format for distribution to students.

Browser issues

Some web browsers are better than others at passing our printer-friendly layout correctly to printers. Inevitably, we have had to compromise on some areas of the layout, to account for browser shortcomings. The print layout has been tested, and we are confident that it should cause the vast majority of people no problems. If however you do obtain poor or sub-standard results when printing from our pages, apparently caused by the page layout, please let us know so that we can correct the problem.
