Fair trade: does it work? (29 KB, DOC)
There is now no doubt that fair trade is of life-changing benefit to workers in developing countries. But does fair trade work at this end of the production chain - in more affluent countries such as ours? Are we better informed about the production of our commodities and its costs? If so, why do fairly-traded products still cost more than their counterparts on supermarket shelves? Have supermarkets persuaded us of the benefits of fair trade? And is the idea spreading? Written by Margaret Hunter, February 2006.

New Research Reveals Success of Fair Trade in Europe (30 KB, DOC)
A recent survey, carried out in 25 European countries, shows that Fair Trade sales in Europe have been growing at an average 20% per year since 2000. The annual net retail value of Fair Trade products sold in Europe now exceeds 660 million. This is more than double the figure five years ago. Fair Trade has thus become one of the fastest growing markets in the world. Release from the Fair Trade Advocacy Office in Brussels, 20th February 2006.
Fair trade: how do we know its fair? (? KB, DOC)

Most of us would prefer to buy goods which have been produced without exploiting workers, especially those who already suffer extreme poverty. So can we tell what is fair? Written by Margaret Hunter, February 2006.
